Downloading Android Apps

One might think that after getting the Google Play Store on a Chromebookyou’ll be able to download and use any Android app. However, that isunfortunately not the case. Some of the apps are not designed for Chromebookso they will be unavailable. And some of them are not fully compatible withthe Chromebook but will probably one okay, so don’t expect full Androidfunctionality just yet.* * *

Which apps can I install?

Once the Android app support for Chrome moves out of its beta/developmentphases, you’ll be able to download and install almost any Android app. Someapps, of course, are restricted by hardware and won’t run on a Chromebook. SMSapps or any apps that need access to carrier-provided text messaging (WhatsAppas an example) won’t run on a Chromebook. Neither will apps that need GPS orapps that need a rear camera. Thankfully WhatsApp does have a web versionwhich you can access from any browser, which connects to your phone.Still, you’ll be able to download apps like Microsoft Word, Netflix, Skype andmany others that don’t run natively on Chromebooks currently. There are perhaps a couple of downsides here. In its current state, Androidapps can’t be resized onscreen, so you end up with a full screen single app alot of the time, just like you do with most Android smartphones. Secondly,Chromebooks aren’t known for having much storage space, so having appsinstalled will undoubtedly take up some valuable space on some of the lowercapacity models.

Access Google Play Store on Fire TV Stick (2021)

Before I proceed, let me clarify that you can’t straight up install GooglePlay Store on Fire TV Stick. However, there is a way that allows you to accessapps directly from Play Store’s library and lets you seamlessly install theapp on your Fire TV. We are going to use the Aurora Store which is an open-source client for Google Play Store and it’s completely safe to use. This isnot to be confused with Play Store alternatives. So having cleared that, let’snow move to the steps.1. First of all, go ahead and download the latest APK of Aurora Store fromhere. I would recommend you download the APK on your Android smartphone foreasy sideloading.2. Now, go through our guide on how to sideload APKs on Fire TV Stick andinstall Aurora Store. The first method would be the easiest one so just followthat. However, if that does not work then head over to other methods.3. To briefly explain the sideloading process, you need to install TotalCommander and ‘Send Files to TV’ (SFTTV) app on your Fire TV Stick fromAmazon’s Appstore. After that, install the SFTTV app on your Androidsmartphone. Next, transfer the Aurora Store APK to your Fire TV Stick.4. Now, open Total Commander on your Fire TV Stick and locate the AuroraStore APK. It should be available in the “Download” folder.5. Click on it to install the app. On the next page, you will have to allowTotal Commander to “Install Unknown Apps“.9. Finally, click on “Install” and Aurora Store aka client of Play Store willbe sideloaded on your Fire TV Stick.10. Now, open it. Click on “Next” and give storage permission. Finally, youwill be asked to add your Google account. I would strongly recommend not toenter your Google credentials as the app itself says, it violates Google’sTerms and Conditions. So your account may be deactivated or blacklisted byGoogle. Instead, click on “Anonymous” and Aurora Store will take care of it.Note: In case, you are facing login issues or apps are not getting installedthen you can create a throwaway Google account and use it on Aurora Store.11. Finally, Aurora Store will be live on your Fire TV Stick. It looks verysimilar to Google Play Store. Having said that, keep in mind, the Fire TVremote does not sit well with Aurora Store. In some cases, you might have touse a mouse.12. To give an example, here I installed Solid Explorer on my Fire TV Stickstraight from the Play Store without any hitch.13. Keep in mind, you will have to allow Aurora Store to “Install UnknownApps“. That’s it.

Setup the Google Play Store

1. If you haven’t done so already, enable Apps from Unknown Sources within the Fire TV’s settings. 2. Launch the Google Play Store. Unfortunately, the Fire TV cannot launch the app directly because it is a system app. You’ll need to use an app like FireStarter that is capable of launching system apps. If you use FireStarter, be sure to enable “Show system apps” within its settings. ES File Explorer is another app that can launch system apps. 3. Login to your Google account. This is actually easier said than done because the cursor of a USB mouse connected to your Fire TV is actually invisible within the Google Play Store app. You should be able to get through all but the last step with just a keyboard if you press ENTER when you’re done filling in each field. The last two screens where you need to accept the Terms of Service are the ones that require someting other than a keyboard. One option is to use a virtual mouse app like Wukong. The other option is touse a USB mouse, move the invisible cursor to the bottom right, then slowlymove the mouse up and to the left while clicking. You should be able to hitthe accept button after a few attempts. If neither of those work for you, youcan connect via ADB and try the command adb shell input tap 1800 1000 4. Once you get to the Play Store screen, you should disable automatic app updates because you don’t want the Google Play Store updating your apps from the Amazon Appstore. Do this by going into the app’s settings menu. Special thanks to BagiMT, venkat, and elliwigy for their insights which leadto this guide.

Manually replacing the Google Play Store with a different version

If you want to update the Google Play Store APK or want to try a differentversion, simply follow the main guide starting at step 4.

What to do if the Google Play Store auto-updates

If you don’t resign the APK and the Google Play Store auto-updates itself to adifferent version that you don’t want, it’s easy to revert back. All you needto do is “uninstall” the Google Play Store with an app manager like ES FileExplorer. Since the Google Play Store is installed as a system app, uninstalling it actually only removes app updates and not the original versionyou installed with the guide above. 1. Install ES File Explorer from the Amazon Appstore and launch the app. 2. Select the “APP” icon from the homepage. 3. Select “System Apps” from the title bar. 4. Find and select the Google Play Store icon. 5. Select “Uninstall” and confirm that you only want to uninstall updates.Show Guide”
